The Shawnee Mission School District will be hosting the 2019 Johnson County Spelling Bee on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at:

Indian Woods Middle School

9700 Woodson

Overland Park, KS 66207

The Spelling Bee will be conducted in two sessions, followed by a Championship Session. There will not be a vocabulary session. Approximately 40 spellers will be randomly assigned to a preliminary session and the top four from each session will move on to the Championship Session. We are unable to personalize session requests and spellers will be expected to attend the assigned session. Participants moving on to the Championship Session are welcome to leave but must be prepared to compete at approximately 12:15.

All eight championship-round participants will be allowed to compete in the state bee.

Session 1                                 Registration begins at 8:00                Spelling Bee will begin at 8:30

Session 2                                 Registration begins at 10:15              Spelling Bee will begin at 10:45

Championship Session            Registration begins at 12:15              Championship will begin at 12:45

The times for each session are subject to change. There will be a 30-minute lunch break for judges immediately following Session 2. No session will begin before the above stated times unless every speller assigned to the session has either checked in or notified the coordinator that they will not be participating. The rules will be repeated for each session, and the chosen words will be comparable, but not repeated, in each session. The Championship Session word list will begin at the highest level attained in a preliminary session.

Adult sponsors and family members may enter and exit the gymnasium only between rounds. It is our desire to maintain a climate free of distraction for our spellers on stage.
