Eclipse 2017On August 21, 2017, for the first time since 1918, a solar eclipse will be visible on a path across the United States.  SHMS staff have been busy planning to make this once-in-a-lifetime event a unique learning experience for our students. Students will be bringing home OPT IN forms that require a parent or guardian signature. You may also download this form to print at home. Students will only be allowed to participate in the outdoor solar eclipse activities on Monday if this form is signed and returned to the office by 9 a.m. on August 21.

As always, student safety is our top priority, and safety training sessions will be provided to all students. SHMS has purchased and will provide all students and participants who attend the outdoor activities special ISO-certified eclipse glasses to wear during the event. Although there is no way to fully guarantee student safety during such a rare event, we will take precautionary measures including pre-education to make students aware of the risks involved in directly looking at the sun. At no time should students or other participants remove the eclipse glasses and look directly at the sun as it could cause permanent eye damage or other unknown effects. There is no way for the school to guarantee that your child will not remove his or her eclipse glasses, so please speak with your student about the importance of keeping eclipse glasses on at all times during this event.

PLEASE NOTE: If this form is not returned with all signatures, the student will not participate in the solar eclipse viewing on August 21, 2017.
