Students present on Victorian England

Students in Mrs. Carley’s and Miss Dugan’s classes share their research on Victorian England in preparation for reading Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Students spent the last two weeks investigating what life was like in England during the 1800’s and presenting what they learned to their classmates. Topics included currency and the cost of living, social classes, hygiene, fashion, prisons, workhouses, child labor, and Charles Dickens himself.

“Since life in Victorian England is a little bit removed from what students today are familiar with, we thought a mini-research project would be a great idea for giving them context before reading the story,” said Mrs. Carley. As part of the research unit, students also received instruction from Mrs. Cheek, SHMS Librarian, on creating source citations. 7th grade ELA classes will begin the holiday classic after Thanksgiving break.
